Buttonhole

Buttonhole

How to Stitch your Buttonhole
First mark your knitting with a smooth yarn while you are knitting, to be pulled out after pressing. The lower sts will run, the top edge is closed cast on. (happens automatically) Wrong side facing
Thread your ndl with a strand of yarn folded in half and start with slipping the ndl through the loop to fix thread to side of buttonhole. Now work taking 1 st from the front (new) and into back (old). Work back from behind inserting into one new st then back into the old st (yarn through it on previous sew through). Continue across sts until you have closed all open sts. Now over sew on the other side of the buttonhole.
On the upper side of the buttonhole the 'sts' are your cast off loops, not proper sts, you just have to make them behave as the opposite edge. I have worked these sts in contrast so you can see how they work. Finally oversew your thread on the side where you began and thread you unwanted ends down a stitch channel. This is all worked on the wrong side. Picture on the right shows finish on the rightside of the garment.
